Why Can't I Hear When Someone Calls Me?

I’ve been having a frustrating issue with my Android phone lately, and I’m hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot. Whenever someone calls me, I can’t hear anything at all! I’ve tried a few things, but nothing seems to work.

Possible Causes

I’ve started to think about what might be causing the problem. Here are a few things I suspect are at play:

  • Sound Settings: I double-checked the ringer volume, and it seems to be turned up. But what if there are other sound settings I missed?
  • Do Not Disturb Mode: I usually keep Do Not Disturb Mode off but sometimes it turns on by itself. Maybe that’s why I’m not hearing calls?
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: I occasionally connect my phone to Bluetooth devices. Could it be that calls are routing through Bluetooth, and I just don’t realize it?
  • Speaker Issues: It’s also possible that there’s a hardware issue with my phone’s speakers. I haven’t dropped my phone or anything, but could that still be the case?

What I’ve Tried

So far, I’ve attempted:

  • Restarting my phone.
  • Checking and adjusting the ringer volume multiple times.
  • Ensuring that Do Not Disturb is turned off.
  • Disconnecting Bluetooth devices when expecting a call.

Have you considered seeing an audiologist? There might be underlying hearing impairments contributing to this issue. Age and loud noise exposure can significantly impact hearing health.

That’s a good point! I’m also curious if anyone here has experienced similar issues and what steps they took to address it.

I used to struggle with hearing phone calls after years of loud concerts. Getting custom earplugs has made a difference! It’s worth considering what affects your ear health.

That’s really interesting! Did you notice an improvement immediately after using the earplugs?

I think age definitely plays a role. Many people experience some level of hearing loss as they age, which may not be obvious until it significantly affects communication.

True, but what about young people? I’ve seen teens with hearing issues too, especially those who listen to music loudly.

A friend of mine had a similar problem and it turned out to be earwax buildup! Sometimes it can be something simple like that. Definitely worth checking out.

Wow! That’s surprising but makes sense. How did your friend resolve that?

Hearing aids are a great option for those with noticeable impairments. It’s not a taboo! Many people benefit from them, and they’re advancing in quality constantly.

I agree! Some people avoid them due to stigma, but realistically, they can enhance life quality significantly.

It’s a bit funny how we ignore our ear health until it becomes a problem. Could be a good reason to revisit those hearing tests we keep postponing!

Definitely! It’s important to be proactive rather than reactive. After all, we’d never ignore a broken leg, so why our hearing?

Have you checked your volume levels? Sometimes the ringer is turned down lower than you’d expect. It’s easy to overlook!

I had a similar issue, and it turned out my phone was in Do Not Disturb mode. Make sure to check that setting too!

Exactly! I’ve also noticed that different apps can override the default ringtone settings. Check your app notifications.

That’s true! If you’re using a third-party messaging app, it may have its own ringer settings.

Also, make sure your ringtone isn’t set to something super quiet or even silent! That’s more common than you think.

Right?! I once had a ringtone that was more of a whisper. Switching back to something louder made a huge difference!

And don’t forget about Bluetooth devices! If you’re connected to headphones, you might miss calls too.
