Odin Stuck on Setup Connection - Need Help!

Background

I’m currently trying to flash a custom ROM on my Android device using Odin, but I’ve hit a snag. It gets stuck at the ‘Setup Connection’ stage every time I try to connect my phone. I’ve tried a few things to troubleshoot, but nothing seems to be working.

What I’ve Tried

  1. USB Cable: I’ve changed the USB cable to see if that resolves the issue. The original cable seemed to be quite worn out, but even with a new one, I still face the same problem.
  2. Different USB Ports: I’ve also tried every USB port on my laptop. It’s a bit of a hassle to keep switching ports, but I’m hoping it might solve the connection issue.
  3. Drivers: I updated all the necessary drivers for my phone. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers to ensure they’re functioning correctly.
  4. Recovery Mode: I’ve entered download mode again to confirm that the phone is indeed connected in the correct mode. It still shows that it’s ready for Odin.
  5. Odin Version: Tested different versions of Odin—3.12.3 and 3.13.1. I read somewhere that certain versions may work better with specific devices.

Question

I’m at a loss! Is there something I’m missing or another workaround that might help? Has anyone encountered this issue before? Your thoughts and tips would be really appreciated.

Additional Information

For context, I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S8 and it’s currently running Android 9. I really want to get this custom ROM installed, but this connection issue is frustrating.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m having the same issue with Odin. Have you tried rebooting your device and computer? Sometimes that clears things up.

Definitely try that! Also, check the USB ports you’re using. Some are notoriously unreliable.

Make sure your drivers are well installed. I had problems when my USB drivers were outdated. It created a mess!

Honestly, it’s so frustrating when Odin won’t connect. Have you tried a different USB cable? Sometimes it can just be a faulty cable that’s the issue.

Great point, Thomas! I had to reinstall my Samsung drivers once to get Odin working properly.

Rebooting the phone in download mode might also help. It sometimes kicks Odin into gear. Worth a shot!

That’s a good idea! Driver issues can be a major roadblock.

If you’re still stuck, have you checked your antivirus settings? Sometimes they block Odin from connecting.

I did once, and it solved my issue! Always good to have a backup cable.

Just to lighten things up, maybe Odin is having a bad day! But seriously, check everything mentioned here—it’s usually something small.

Never thought of that! Thanks for the tip, Michael!

Sometimes I think we overthink it all. Just remember to breathe! It often helps with tech troubles.

I’ve had the same issue with Odin. I found that the version I was using had compatibility issues. Make sure you’re using the latest version as it often resolves bugs related to connection setup.

That makes sense! I noticed some improvements in recent updates. Have you tried checking the release notes for changes related to connection stability?

Another thing to consider is your USB cable—sometimes it’s the simple things! Try swapping it out before diving deeper into software issues.

Great suggestion! I once struggled for hours until I changed the USB cable. It really can make a big difference!

I’ve found that rolling back to an earlier version can sometimes resolve connection issues. Just be careful which version you pick!

That’s interesting! I haven’t thought of trying an older version. What version did you find works best?

Version 3.14 had some great fixes for connection setup errors, at least for me. I would definitely check it out if you haven’t already.
