How to Turn Off Split Screen on Android?

If you’re finding the split screen feature on your Android device more of a hassle than a help, you’re not alone! Many users prefer using one app at a time for a simpler and more focused experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to turn off the split screen mode so you can return to single-app usage.

1. Understanding Split Screen Mode

Before we dive into the steps, it’s useful to know what split screen mode is. This feature allows you to use two apps side by side. While this can be great for multitasking, it can also feel cluttered if you’re only trying to focus on one task.

2. Turning Off Split Screen

Follow these steps to disable split screen on your Android device:

  • Step 1: Exit Split Screen
    • Start by tapping the app you want to keep open (it should be on the left or top half of your screen).
  • Step 2: Close the Other App
    • Look for the line or divider icon (usually a small drag handle) that separates the two apps.
    • With your finger, drag this divider all the way to the edge of the screen to close the other app. This action will minimize the split screen view.
  • Step 3: Fullscreen Mode
    • The remaining app should now occupy the full screen. If it doesn’t, simply go back and open it again from your recent apps to ensure it’s not in split screen.

3. Additional Tips

  • If you want to completely disable the split screen feature:
    • Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Picture-in-picture. Here, you can manage which apps can use split screen and refuse the ones you don’t want.
  • Another option is to clear your recent apps. This will remove all apps from that view, preventing split screen until you open an app again.

4. Conclusion

Disabling split screen can lead to a more streamlined experience, especially if you’re only focusing on one task. Whether it’s for gaming, reading, or working, reverting back to a single-app view might just enhance your user experience.

To turn off split screen on Android, first swipe down from the top of the screen to access the quick settings. Look for the square app overview button and tap it. You should see both apps in split screen mode. Drag the divider line to the bottom of the screen or tap ‘X’ to close one of the apps.

I’ve had the same issue! On my Samsung, it’s a bit different. I just press the recent apps button and close one of the apps directly.

If you’re using a Google Pixel, after pressing the recent apps button, just swipe up on the app you want to close. It’s nice and easy!

Good to know! What about Xiaomi users? Does it vary much?

On Xiaomi devices, just tap the recent apps button, then swipe away the split screen apps individually. It’s straightforward once you know where to swipe!

I’m glad you brought this up! Did anyone else not find the split screen feature helpful? Feels a bit crowded to me sometimes.

It can feel cramped, especially on smaller screens! I guess it’s just personal preference. Anyway, I love using it for multitasking while taking notes!

I never really used it until recently! But once I figured out how to turn it off, now it’s smooth sailing for me. Thanks for the tips everyone!

I find it funny how technology can be both a blessing and a headache at the same time! But those tips truly help.

LOL! True, sometimes I feel like I need a manual just to keep up. But at least this forum makes it easier to find help!

I’ve been struggling with this too! Sometimes, apps like YouTube just open in split screen automatically. I find it so annoying. Anyone know how to stop that?

I totally get your frustration! Try checking your settings under ‘Apps’ to see if there’s an option that controls split screen functions specifically.

You can also go to the ‘Developer Options’ if you have that enabled. There’s a toggle for split screen that might help with app behaviors. Just be careful when changing anything there!

Every time I disable the split screen option, it seems like some apps just revert back! What’s up with that? Anyone else facing the same issue?

That happens to me too! It might be linked to how the apps are coded. Some developers set apps to prefer split screen, which is super frustrating.

And don’t forget about the recent apps list! Sometimes if you open an app from there, it defaults to split screen. I’m tired of that too!

Exactly! It’s like my phone has a mind of its own. I really wish there was a universal toggle for turning that off completely.

Honestly, I never thought I’d miss the old single screen layout. Now I’m just confused all the time trying to manage these settings!

Hey, have you all checked the accessibility settings? There’s sometimes options there that might conflict with split screen settings. It’s worth a look!
