How to Change Your Default PDF Viewer on Android

Changing the default PDF viewer on your Android device can seem a little tricky, but it’s actually a straightforward process! Whether you want to switch to Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit PDF Reader, or another app, I’ll guide you step-by-step through the settings.

Step 1: Access Your Device Settings

First, you need to open your Settings app. You can do this by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping on the gear icon, or finding the Settings app in your app drawer.

Step 2: Find Apps

In the Settings menu, scroll down and look for an option labeled Apps or Applications. Tap on it to view all the applications installed on your device.

Step 3: Locate the Current PDF Viewer

You’ll see a list of apps. Scroll down to find your current default PDF viewer. It might be listed as PDF Viewer, Google PDF Viewer, or the name of the app you currently use (e.g., Drive PDF Viewer).

Step 4: Clear Defaults

Once you tap on the app, you’ll see an option that says Open by default or Set as default. Tap on this, and then you should see a button that says Clear defaults. Press it to remove the existing default settings for this app.

Step 5: Open a PDF File

Now that you’ve cleared the defaults, it’s time to open a PDF file. You can do this by going to any PDF file, either through the file manager or an email attachment.

Step 6: Choose Your New PDF Viewer

When you try to open the PDF file now, your Android device will prompt you with a choice of available PDF viewer apps. Select your preferred app from the list and choose Always if you want it to be the default viewer from now on.

Tips to Remember:

  • If you don’t see your preferred PDF reader app listed, make sure it’s been installed from the Google Play Store.
  • If you want to revert to the previous PDF viewer or try another one, just follow these steps again!

Once you’ve set it up, you’re good to go! Enjoy your reading with your new default PDF viewer! If you have any questions or run into issues, feel free to ask below!

To change your default PDF viewer on Android, go to Settings, then Apps. From there, you can view all apps and select your preferred PDF app to set it as default.

That sounds easy enough! What if the PDF viewer I want isn’t listed? Do I need to install it first?

Good question, francis33! If the app isn’t installed, you’ll need to grab it from the Google Play Store before it shows up in the app list.

I didn’t know you had to do that! Does it work with any PDF app?

Most of the popular PDF apps work fine, but it’s always good to check the app’s compatibility with your Android version for the best experience.

I think I have an outdated PDF viewer. Should I delete it before changing the default?

No need to delete it unless you want to free up space. But keep in mind that old apps might cause issues with new ones.

That’s a relief! Can anyone share a personal favorite PDF viewer? I need recommendations!

I love using Xodo! It’s super user-friendly and has great features for editing PDFs too.

Xodo is indeed great, but I personally prefer Adobe Acrobat Reader for its robust features and cloud integration.

Why do you think Adobe is so popular? I find it a bit heavy on my device.

It’s popular due to its reliability and extensive features. But if you’re looking for lightweight options, try Foxit PDF Reader.

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely check it out. Is it easy to set Foxit as the default?

Absolutely! Just follow the same steps: Settings > Apps > Foxit > Set as default. Piece of cake!

Changing the default PDF viewer can sometimes be tricky, especially if the app you want to use doesn’t appear in the options list. Have you tried clearing the default settings of the current viewer first?

I did try that, but still had issues. It wouldn’t let me select the new viewer. I think it’s an app bug.

I’ve faced similar problems. Sometimes it helps to restart your device after changing settings. It can refresh the app list!

Restarting worked for me! The new icon showed up afterward. It’s funny how small things can solve big issues.

Sometimes, after updates, the default settings get reset. If you’re having issues, check if your app needs an update too. Compatibility can create problems.
