Gmail Won't Stop Syncing - Help Needed!

I’ve been having a really frustrating issue with the Gmail app on my Android device. It just won’t stop syncing! No matter what I do, it keeps using up my battery and bombarding me with notifications every few minutes.

Here’s a bit more detail on my situation:

Device Specs

  • Model: Samsung Galaxy S10
  • OS Version: Android 11
  • Gmail App Version: Latest as of writing the post

Symptom Details

  • Continuous Syncing: The sync icon is constantly spinning.
  • Battery Drain: I’ve noticed a significant drop in battery life, often over 30% in a few hours.
  • Notifications: I receive a notification for every single email arrival, even ones I’ve already read.

What I’ve Tried So Far

  1. Reset Sync Settings: I went into the app settings and disabled sync, then re-enabled it. No luck.
  2. Cleared Cache and Data: I’ve cleared both cache and data for the Gmail app. After that, I set up my account again, but the issue persists.
  3. Checked Account Settings: I looked into my Gmail account settings and ensured that syncing is only set to my most important folders.
  4. Updated App: I made sure that the Gmail app is updated to the latest version from the Play Store.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Check your app permissions in your phone settings. Sometimes it helps to reset the permissions for Gmail.

I’ve found that syncing issues often come down to internet problems. Have you tried switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data? Sometimes it helps!

I usually do that, and it works, but not this time! Ugh!

Don’t forget to check the sync settings in the Gmail app too! Make sure the toggle for ‘Sync Gmail’ is turned on.

Yes, I checked, and it is on. This is so frustrating!

I had a similar issue last month! Restarting my device seemed to clear things up. Have you tried that yet?

Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling the app can fix bugs. Have you given that a shot?

I haven’t tried that yet! I’ll add it to my list of things to do.

I once had my Gmail stuck syncing for days! It turned out my phone’s storage was nearly full. Freeing up space solved it!

Good point! I’ll have to check my storage as well. Can’t believe I didn’t think of that!

Have you updated the Gmail app recently? Sometimes bugs get fixed in updates, but you might encounter new issues too!

I’ll check for updates, but it better not be another buggy version!
